Will luxury car buyers fork over more than $120,000 for a full-size SUV? BMW is betting they will for their most powerful X7 ever, which will combine luxury with a zero-to-60 time of 5.2 seconds. But wait, is an MX7 on the horizon? BMW enthusiasts hope so!
The new BMW X7 is already available with two trim levels, the xDrive40i with its 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six and the xDrive50i, which packs a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8. We had a chance to drive both models at the X7 launch event and we’ll update you about that with a review in a couple of days.
We had a chance to sit down with a BMW spokesperson to discuss the potential future of the X7 lineup. The X7, like the 5 Series, uses BMW’s N63 V8 engine. This engine produces a healthy 456 hp in the X7 but in the 8 Series, it produces a whopping 523 hp. It is already rumored that this same level of power will soon find its way into the M550i, so we asked if the same M Performance treatment could be given to the X7. The spokesperson told us that an M50i X7 “doesn’t make much sense but there will probably be additional models – definitely a more powerful V8 coming.”
